Astronomers pointed NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope at one tiny patch of sky for several months, which would be the equivalent size that a grain of rice when held at arm’s length. Yesterday afternoon, a severe electrical storm passed over Sydney, delaying all train lines for hours (and shutting mine down completely), blacking out traffic lights and generally just causing havoc. I was in the 14th storey of my office and I watched as the storm passed around the building - out the window I couldn’t see anything but thick, grey clouds, and the occasional flash of lightning. To be honest, it was quite scary, hearing the loud claps of thunder and the pouring rain and wondering how I would get home.

The reason why I’m still thinking of that storm even now is that I’ve never been in a place to watch a literally storm pass around me. It was an amazing picture of what Jesus is for us - the shelter from the storm. The safe place where I can watch the storm pass around me, even if watching the storm scares me completely. That image of Jesus being a stronghold has never been so clear to me as in that moment. It’s amazing what a comfort He is in times of distress. I’d do well to remember this image, the next time I’m going through a storm - metaphorical or no - to remember and to praise God, the one who has the power to calm the wind and the waves.
